Youth initiative - You dont know until you try
This is a story of one youth initiative that appeared from nowhere but became something special for a group of young people from different cities of Estonia. Idea of the project was to form a group of active youth in Tallinn that would travel to disadvantaged region (Ida-Virumaa), work with local youth by introducing non-formal methodology and other possibilities for self-development.
The idea took off. We started when there were 5 of us. People were coming and going but at the end of first year we realized that there were 19 of us that look forward to the initiatives following up. As a result, project is still in progress since 2012. Moreover, 3 members of the team have started their 2 own initiatives for the first time. It's quite a result considering that they are just 18.
You might be wondering what kept the project alive taking in consideration the initial ideas simplicity. Well, we also are wondering. But we have come up with an conclusion:
- first year of the initiative was about training youth from Ida-Virumaa, second year these youth already acted as trainers - they traveled around the region working with other young people on their own. By imposing responsibilities on participants you generate great capacity and energy that remains hidden if you try to control everything. The more youth is responsible the more committed they are. Furthermore, it's more fun too.
The project has been running in the frame of demised Youth in Action programme. Since now Erasmus+ initiatives can be international only, therefore we are looking for those who would like to work with us on something cool and great and bring it to international level.
