YEU finally arriving to Brussels - interview with YEU President
So, finally YEU will arrive to Brussels? Is it true?
Yes it is true. After many years of brainstorming and planning we did it. In April 2010 YEU will have a new Administrative Office in Belgium. I would like to stress that this has only been possible due to great work and commitment of current GB, Head Office in Faro and support of our Member Organisatons.
Why do you think that opening a YEU Administrative Office in Brussels is good for YEU?
I think it is good because this is the conclusion of a long process of study, research and consulation. Already APN and previous GB were working on it. Why now? Now we have concrete strategic plan of development, is not just a plan about one year. It is implementing this plan and not the Office moving that is the main point. In addition to this it has been increasingly clear that faro as location is not right place for office. Brussels is currently best place taking into account best practice of other INGYOs.
Will there be high costs of new office?
The cost is the right expenses/investment for YEU and each expense is covered by Administrative cost without changing the lines in budget approved from previous APN. The concrete actions will in long term will generate incomes to develop more our internal programme and increase voluntary opportunities within YEU.
Why is the funding so important to YEU?
We are an INGYO Iand to implement activities and support members we need resources and staff, beside the amazing voluntary contribution that YEU members contributes to development of network. We are now in a process of creating the YEU strategic plan for 2011-2013. We hope that we will be able to continue to increase the number of international youth exchanges that we provide to our members and support them to organise and host them. We can do this more easily if we are properly funded and we have a stable and well funded administrative staff supported by a team of volunteers.
Won't it be hard to find good staff for YEU in Brussels? – There are so many other NGOs.
We will be more accessible than Faro for members to work professionally for YEU. An experience in Brussels can be more valued as a part of professional career in youth field because it gives more opportunities for person to meet with other International Organisations and the most of International/ Representation events are held in Brussels.
What will be the main benefits for YEU MOs?
The most important thing is to start to use the office as a service for our MOs, for example to have space to be used by MOs for different meetings and representation. Another main reason for opening new administrative office in Brussels is to make direct and more regular contact with our MOs. Being in a central Europe makes traveling easier and cheaper.
What is planned for the Faro office?
Current GB and me as a President believe that it is important to develop specialized competences of YEU being close to our MOs and young people in generally. Faro is the first step in this process of becoming Volunteers centre for South of Portugal coordinated by Administrative office and implemented by international volunteers. In the same time, we started similar process in Italy in building International Training Center.
What is the one thing that you hope to achieve with opening the office in Brussels?
I believe that opening such an office in Brussels will be a great tool to increase the cooperation among MOs, number of opportunities and motivated young people to achieve our mission that is promotion of peace and understanding among young people.
