WOMEN EMPOWERMENT AND SOCIAL CHANGE - GETTING READY FOR BREAD AND ROSES!
The preparatory meeting of the Erasmus Plus youth exchange “Bread and Roses! Fighting multiple discrimination” took place in Brussels from March 23rd to March 26th. The project, funded by BIJ, will take place from May 22nd to May 29th and will involve 28 young people (mostly young women and girls) from Belgium, Italy, FYROM/Macedonia, Greece, Turkey, Spain and United Kingdom.
The aim of the exchange is to explore the concept of human rights and multiple discrimination on the grounds of gender, ethnicity and religion and to empower young European women by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to become key drivers of change towards a more equal and inclusive society. The idea is to create a solidarity network of people, mostly young women, fighting radicalization and discrimination at the local and European level.
During the prep meeting, group leaders/facilitators from partner organisations had the chance to develop ownership over the project, to get to know each other and to analyse the different aspects of the exchange. Thanks to the guidance of the educational coordinator of the project, YEU senior trainer Ilaria, facilitators went through a real empowering process themselves, by sharing their experiences, stories and expectations as young women and by adding their personal contribution to the overall program, developing session outlines and detailing the different activities to be implemented before and during the exchange. In this sense, YEU partner organization AICEM (from Italy) had a key role, by providing clear expertise on the topic and by supporting the overall process.
The exchange will therefore lead participants through an empowering process that will start from the different aspects and layers within their personal identities (focusing specifically on gender and religious based discrimination) and how these are perceived by society in general (my identity vs. what my community is expecting from me and general expectations of society towards women). This will be followed by an empowering process through which different possible responses will be shared and discussed (interreligious dialogue, intercultural dialogue, no hate speech movement, etc.), allowing participants to come up with their own responses, their own choices to be shared within local communities in order to create safe spaces for all.
The call for participants for “Bread and Roses!” is open in YEU intranet till April 8th: take a look at it and don’t lose your chance to be part of this empowering youth exchange!!
