We learned so much that it was hard to summarize it all at the end of the week

01/07/2010
I went on my first YEU event this May in Bari, Italy. The topic of this training course and youth exchange was Conflict Resolution and I don't have a single regret about going on this course.

On arrival and meeting so many new people from so many different countries, everyone was so friendly and welcoming and we all just wanted to get to know each other and learn about their countries and cultures. Our first day of training was a bit of a shock for everyone when it was terrible rain and wind .We had to fit 27 of us in to a small cabin as the working spaces were taken over by the weather. . It was cozy and no one complained, it was part of the experience and we all found it funny. It even fit into the pirate theme of the week and the wooden cabin was our ship. All of us being so tight in the room brought us close from the start.

The training course running along side with the youth exchange worked because everyone spoke about what we had learned during the day and during free time we all got to go to the beach and spent our free time together.  We even got to have some friendly competition between training and exchange.

The trainers where a huge part of this course, they weren't there just to teach us about conflict resolution but they were like friends to us all, they took part and had fun with us. Their teaching methods worked and they had a lot of respect from all of us. Learning by writing letters to parrots and singing songs, taking part in simulation and role plays is a new way that I have never learned before but enjoyed and got a lot out of.  The trainers obviously put a lot of effort and time into the event and the small details made each session special and memorable. We learned so much that it was hard to summarize it all at the end of the week. We learned what a conflict is, the definition, and what different types of conflict there are. We learned how conflict starts with triggers and how it escalates. Then we learned how the cause of a conflict can also be the key to resolving it. There was so much we learned and in such a special way of learning to take back to our youth organizations and put into action. From using the way of learning with role plays and simulation it made it real and showed us how we would expect it to be in real life it.

I don't have any complaints about the week because every moment was part of a fantastic life changing week . It was my first YEU experience but definitely not my last.
