Health and well-being of young people discussed in Rome
From June 16th till 18th the first European Conference on “Health and well-being of young people” was held in Rome, Italy. This three-day conference was organized by the Forum Nazionale dei Giovani (Italian Youth Forum). As health issues are in the working plan of YEU, we decided that it is time to start taking action on that level as well.
The event combined several speeches by ministers, experts, professors etc., and workshops. The workshops were held on the topics like: Young people: sexual and reproductive rights; Eating disorders and body image concerns among young people; Enhancing the role of Sport in the prevention of risk behaviour; Sex Education and Epidemiology of Sexually Transmitted Infections; Nutritional Education, Physical Activity and Healthy Lifestyles and Communication and Institutional Campaigns on Youth Health and Wellbeing in the Member States.
After the three days spent together the common understanding was that we must pay more attention on health and youth issues. It is clear to everyone that in nowadays’ society we have an enormous problem with eating disorders, alcohol and drug abuse. Even if we do not want to admit it, it is absolutely true. Take a look around when you walk on the streets or go out on weekends. The problematic part here is that no one knows how to solve the situation - how to educate youth about the consequences of their actions and why one should live a healthy life. Some think it should be put to formal education working plans, some think it is a matter of parents, some think that there is nothing to do.
I attended the workshops on eating disorders and communication and campaigning. It was great to see how different organisations fight for young people to be healthier and socially more responsible. Hopefully, YEU turns its attention to health issues in the future as it makes up a big part of youth problems.
