Facilitating for future
After several flights and a journey that lasted almost twenty-four hours, I finally arrived in Ganja of Azerbaijan, the venue chosen for the 2012 “YEU developing You”, as a participant of the training course “Facilitators for Future”.
Very comfortably accommodated in the facility arranged by our hosts “Bridge for Future”, we started our activities in an “official” way, with the opening ceremony at the presence of the major of Ganja, representatives from the ministry of youth and sport, the local government, the EYF and YEU.
This official part amazed me, as thinking that all those people moved just for us made me start to realize the big importance that is given to youth work in Azerbaijan.
Once the ceremonies were over, the activities started with the usual getting to know each other and teambuilding games, to which our group responded in what I consider to be an amazing way, completing tasks and managing to communicate successfully from the very beginning like a group that had always worked together. This was a clear sign of how well the group dynamics would develop during the project; in fact, with no big difference between the motivations that brought them there, all the participants gave their best to contribute to the success of the program.
To draw a balance, I can say that not just my expectations were fulfilled in terms of new skills, knowledge and attitudes gained, but having to face some really challenging situations I felt that I managed to develop some basic facilitation competences of which I perceived the need; competences that I have already started using in my local community preparing team building sessions for youth groups.
I would like to thank once again YEU for developing opportunities for lots of young people and youth workers around Europe; Bridge for Future for the great job they did in hosting all those beautiful people in an even more beautiful setting, and, last but not least, to our trainers Rui and Vuzal, who did their best to manage a challenging and energetic group like ours and succeeding in delivering a high-quality training experience.
