EVS on arrival training in Verbania
The EVS includes four trainings before departure, on arrival, mid-term and evaluation. Between April 14-22 we participated in the on arrival training organized by Cemea del Lazio – REPLAY and Italian National Agency in Verbania, north of Italy. The training brought together 32 volunteers doing EVS in Italy from 12 countries: Portugal, Spain, U.K., France, Estonia, Romania, Albania, Lithuania, Austria, Hungary, Turkey and Greece.
The on arrival training was divided into two parts: the Italian language course and cross-cultural learning. The Italian course had six lessons on basic and advanced level depending on the volunteers’ previous knowledge. The Italian lessons covered Italian culture, grammar, everyday useful phrases, numbers, etc.
The intercultural programme covered issues related to getting to know each other, expectations, interpersonal communication, conflict management, motivation for volunteering and EVS, EVS rights and duties, culture and adaptation, stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination.
The participants group was very diverse which enriched the learning process. There were some activities in which the group became more involved giving their best: the intercultural night, the discussion of a film about the Italian Màfia, the presentation of EVS's projects, etc.
In general, this training course went well. And, of couse, there was lots of fun! We exchanged emails, contacts, and have remained in contact through Facebook!
