YEU facilitates the way to the EU Youth Conference for the Cyprus Presidency
The second cycle of the Structured Dialogue with youth was successfully concluded at the EU Youth Conference that was hosted by the Cyprus Presidency in Nicosia between the 11th and 13th of September. For the duration of the 18 month Trio Presidency (1 July 2011 – 31 December 2012), the Trio Presidency of Poland, Denmark and Cyprus in cooperation with the European Commission and the European Youth Forum made a common decision to implement the structured dialogue on the theme of “Youth participation in democratic life in Europe” with a chosen specific focus area for each of the three presidencies. In this context, the structured dialogue under the Cyprus Presidency focused on “Youth Participation and Social Inclusion, with an emphasis on the young people with migrant background”.
For the purposes of the Conference more than 100 youth delegates from the EU Member States, Candidate Countries, the European Youth Forum and International Youth Organizations engaged in debates with senior officials from national youth ministries on the topic of the Cyprus Presidency. The outcomes of the prior consultations of young people undertaken in all Member States served as the basis for discussions in seven thematic workshops on information, education and language, attitudes, equal opportunities, support mechanisms and tools, participation and youth organizations.
YEU enjoyed a very strong presence and a very dynamic placement during the conference with almost half of the facilitators leading the 7 thematic workshops coming from within the network. YEU was represented by Marko Paunovic and Marius Ulozas, former YEU International Vice-President in the International Facilitators team, and YEU Cyprus GB Members Constantinos Papageorgiou and Eleni Ioannou, and former YEU International President Maria Socratous in the National Facilitators team.
In a final plenary session, youth delegates and ministry officials adopted 14 joint recommendations which will now be reflected in Council Conclusions and a Council Resolution scheduled for adoption at the Council meeting of Youth Ministers on the 23rd of November that will also confirm the overall thematic priority of the next cycle of Structured Dialogue.
