YEU at EU Youth Conference Malta 2017

28/04/2017

Some weeks ago I had a chance to represent YEU International during the last conference of the V Cycle of the Structured Dialogue, in Malta.  Between 20th -23rd of March over 200 young people and policy makers from all over the Europe came together to discuss and  further create actions to enable young people to engage in an inclusive Europe. We have created   action plan with a set of concrete recommendations as well as implementation toolkit for use by member states in order to achieve full youth participation. The implementation action plan will be finalized and disseminated to all relevant stakeholders by the end of the Maltese presidency, with the aim of increasing the capacity of policy makers in the implementation of the recommendations.  I have participated in previous conferences, but this one was one of the best in my opinion. I really enjoy the dynamic and experience within my workshop group. It was extremely helpful to have a space dedicated for youth delegates, and ministerial representation at the same time. All delegates came prepared, willing to share their good practices and were ready to create something new and realistic. Realistic that’s the word of the conference! I am very happy and satisfied about the outcome. It’s nothing out of blue but basics, something concrete and something doable, something that could be actually implemented across Europe. These include:

 - Organize youth festivals for European engagement the local and national levels

- Include a chapter on Youth Work and Youth Spaces in the Youth report of the European Commission

- Have life-skills classes in school curricula

- Develop mental health first aid kits

It doesn’t sound that difficult, does it?

We have come up with many very original and cool ideas but this time is about making sure to cover basic needs of any young person, once this is done we can pursue any higher needs.  I am very glad to see how Structured Dialogue and V Cycle went, and I am looking forward what next presidency of Estonia- Bulgaria- Austria will bring onboard!
