Exercising our Rights! - Developing new tools in support of Social Cohesion - Call for Organizations

17/01/2014

Dear Friends!

YEU has developed a one year project called “Exercising our Rights! - Developing new tools in support of Social Cohesion” based onstrategic plan 2014-2017 and is now looking for organizations willing to participate and give their contribution! So please take a look bellow to see if you believe your organization fits this project!

Title: Exercising our Rights! - Developing new tools in support of Social Cohesion

Dates: January-December 2014

Organiser: Youth for Exchange and Understanding

Eligible Countries: All countries members of Council of Europe

SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT

The project “Exercising our Rights! - Developing new tools in support of Social Cohesion” has been developed based on the YEU Strategic plan 2014-2017: objectives, thematic areas and methods that we have decided to use in order to fulfil the vision and mission of YEU. Apart from that, YEU has decided to create the Year of Innovations – during 2014, we will be promoting the creation of new NFE tools and activities, and implementing them in our events. Moreover, all the activities and tools developed will be in the scope of YEU thematic areas defined in our Strategic plan, namely: Social Cohesion, Active Youth Participation, Intercultural dialogue, Conflict resolution, Human Rights, Social Inclusion, Youth Work and NFE, Sustainable development and New media and Internet Governance.

In line with our thematic areas, the main aim of this project will be following: To build capacities of youth activists working on social cohesion processes in their communities by increasing the level of their skills and knowledge, and empowering them to act as multipliers on different levels (international, national and local).

THE IDEA

We have decided to focus on innovations in NFE regarding social cohesion as a thematic area due to several reasons.

Time of crisis, doesn’t mean just financial consequences, but erosion of ethics and moral values. Worse, it means a raise of xenophobia, nationalism, which are just undercover triggers for hate speech and increased levels of intolerance towards the Others – those who are different: minorities (ethnical, racial, LGBT…), migrants, people with diffabilities. Unfortunately, we are witnessing, instead of an improve in our societies as those of equal opportunities and solidarity, the increase of bigotry, even in state policies by decreasing opportunities for minorities and migrants, mostly. Therefore, we believe that, by working with young people on different levels – European/national/local – and of different backgrounds, we can set examples of good practices which can later be multiplied all over Europe.

OBJECTIVES

The main objectives of this work plan are:

  • To develop new tools/activities by using non-formal education as methodology in order to support young people’s understanding of social cohesion processes, in the creation of a society of equal opportunities, better understanding of different generations of human rights and struggle against discrimination based on personal characteristics;
  • To motivate youth activists to develop and implement local actions, which would serve as examples of good practices;
  • To ensure the transfer of innovations from European to national/local level and vice-versa by assuring the quality of the non-formal education provided.

METHODOLOGY

Pairs of youth activists (one trainer and one organizer) from 15 countries will based on results of the needs assessment related to vulnerable groups have a training on social cohesion related topics. Based on the results, a focus of new tools/activities will be chosen and these will be developed in the training for trainers and organizers. It is possible that different countries will have a focus on different target groups, depending on the needs of the country. These new tools/activities will be“tested” in local communities by implementing small local actions and/or trainings/workshops. An evaluation seminar and presentation of the new tools will be organized in the University on youth and development in Mollina, Spain due to a high number of youth activists present and the possibility to gain high visibility of the project. After that, all the tools and activities developed will be put in a publication which will be at disposal for other organizations to use it.

1st ACTIVITY - Training Building the Grounds - Step towards a better world!

Summary of the Activity

This training will set the context and mutual understanding of the terminology and understanding of the situation related to the main topics of this projec

The Context

According to the Council of Europe, social cohesion is “the capacity of a society to ensure the well-being of all its members, minimising disparities and avoiding marginalisation."

Modern societies are confronted with a number of challenges that threaten social cohesion – not only the economic and financial crisis, but also longer-term trends, including globalization, growing inequality, immigration and increasing cultural, religious and ethnic diversity. Social cohesion is crucial for any society's future and has a profound impact on a person's perceived well-being. According to findings of The Bertelsmann Stiftung and study “Social Cohesion Radar” releasing in July 2013, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland have the highest levels of social cohesion. This study also concludes that Lithuania, Latvia and the southeast European countries of Bulgaria, Greece and Romania suffer from low social cohesion. Most of Western Europe — Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg, Germany,the United Kingdom, France and Spain — feature above-average to average social cohesion.

Objectives

The objectives of this activity are:

  • To reach mutual understanding about the concept of social cohesion and terminology used;
  • To increase participants’ knowledge on the topics: human rights, social cohesion, social inclusion and concept of equal opportunities;
  • To stimulate inter-cultural learning among participants;
  • To stimulate active participation of vulnerable groups in local communities.

Title: Building the grounds – Step One towards a better world!

Dates: 21st-27th of April 2014 (arrival: 20th and departure: 28th)

Who is involved: 30 young people: 15 trainers, 15 organizers.

Eligible Countries: All countries members of Council of Europe

2nd ACTIVITY - Innovation and creation: developing new NFE tools and activities related to social cohesion

Summary of the Activity

This activity will focus on innovations in non-formal education concerning social cohesion and related topics.

Innovation is a key factor in the work of youth organizations. Youth is constantly in change and young people are looking for new ways to learn and develop themselves, especially under the spectrum of the financial crisis in Europe.

New approaches are needed to address these changes and YEU envisions being at the front of these innovations.

Youth struggle to learn; progress and develop personally and professionally in conditions and context that change rapidly. However, a constant reluctance is observed in the field of non-formal education and youth work. They are lacking of addressing youth’s needs for personal and professional development, non-formal learning activities are being repeated throughout the years and ideas for projects are being recycled.

The Context

New approaches are needed to address current youth’s needs. YEU envisions bringing innovation in non-formal education again in the centre of attention. Now, more than ever it is the time to have the creativity and the vision to support youth, especially those specific vulnerable groups. YEU aims at being a pioneer in these innovations, inspire youth workers, empower them, make them dream, take chances and support youth in the context of recent changes in society and stimulate better understanding of vulnerable groups.

Observing the region of Europe, the financial crisis causes complications that threaten society and especially vulnerable groups. In this context, the need to fight social exclusion, discrimination and the lack of access to human rights is inevitable. The proposed TC intends to address this need by providing innovative solutions and approaches to NFE and youth work. New ideas, tools and activities will be developed in the TC, which promise a tangible impact regarding social cohesion, mutual understanding and respect. YEU has developed a document on QA of activities and NFE provided and it will be a basis for setting QA indicators for the rest of this project. The main aim of the TC is to develop new offline and online tools, and activities to support vulnerable groups in their cohesion and inclusion into society

Objectives

The objectives of this activity are:

  • Share new and innovative approaches, tools, concepts and activities;
  • Explore different creativity techniques;
  • Empower participants to be innovate on a constant basis;
  • Develop new approaches, tools, activities and actions;
  • Create an “innovation action plan” for every youth organization/youth activists’ pair participating;
  • Defining QA indicators for better quality of the process;

Title: Innovation and creation: developing new NFE tools and activities related to social cohesion

Dates: 26th of May to 1st of June 2014 (arrival: 25th and departure: 2nd)

Place: Novi Sad, Serbia.

Who is involved: 30 young people: participants of the Activity 1.

Eligible Countries: All countries members of Council of Europe

3rd ACTIVITY - Reality bites: testing the tools in local communities

Summary of the Activity

Reality bites: testing the tools is the activity during which, we will be “testing” the tools and activities developed during training in Novi Sad, Serbia. During that training, tools and activities will be planned for each local community/country involved in the process. This is the moment when youth activists (trainers and organizers) need to implement the new tools/activities that have been developed after needs assessment and two trainings.

Based on the plan, each pair of youth activists will have to organize at least 2 workshops and one event in their local community and with vulnerable groups participating. This means that all the tools/activities/events must be inclusive and gather youth of different backgrounds to work on improvement of their relations, breaking the prejudices and finding common solutions for overcoming problems.

This will not only support the innovative approach, but also will provide a big impact of the process and its multiplication in 15 countries. There will be 45 local actions in total. Besides testing the new tools, QA indicators set during the training in Novi Sad, Serbia will be implemented.

Objectives

The objectives of this activity are:

  • To implement the new activities/tools in local communities with participation of vulnerable groups;
  • To promote non-formal education as a methodology and a concept that is combating discrimination and social exclusion at local level, and supports better understanding;
  • To increase the level of participation of youth (of different backgrounds) in the local community;
  • To increase the level of skills of youth activists (trainers and organizers) by practicing gained knowledge.

Title: Reality bites: testing the tools in local communities

Dates: 1st of June to 15th of September 2014

Who is involved: 900 young people of 15 partner countries (60 each)

4th ACTIVITY - Evaluate to Improve – evaluation and follow up seminar

Summary of the Activity

In order to publish the new tools and activities for further use, it is of the highest importance to evaluate the whole process as well as the each tool developed during the previous period.

Therefore, the Youth activists will, together with the team, evaluate the process, the activities and plan the follow up. Also, the draft of publication will be created. Evaluation and follow up seminar will be held during University on Youth and Development (UYD) in Mollina, Spain. This University is gathering every year 200 young people, NFE and youth work practitioners, trainers, organizers and experts. YEU plans to test the newly developed tools and activities during the UYD with young people participating in other events by organizing open workshops. Also, a meeting with trainers and organizers present there, will be organized in order to present them the new tools and discuss their use, and see if there is room for improvement. Apart from that, a presentation of the whole project will be done during the closing joint session and we believe that it will gain high visibility.

The aim of the seminar is to evaluate new tools and activities developed and assure their quality before publishing them for further use.

Objectives:

The objectives of this activity are:

  • To evaluate the process so far;
  • To test the new tools/activities with other practitioners;
