Variety of adventures
Rafting, climbing, diving and hiking… What are the words that first come in to your mind when thinking of adventure education?
In addition to the sports mentioned above, adventure education can be a variety of actions done in new surroundings. Cooking outdoors, playing different puzzle games in a group or for an example learning how to build a boat from two backpacks and a tarp can be part of this educational method, which is based on experiential learning.
Key factors are head (using cognitive skills), heart (gaining experiences, feelings and values) and hands (the activity that enables all previously mentioned).
Why adventure education?
Adventure education challenges everyone. It can be done in so many different ways and levels that there just has to be something for everyone. Depending on the group you can find step by step activities that create new challenges for them. You can use it as teambuilding method for a group that just met each other’s. It can be used to balance the power relations in a dysfunctional group. For someone with low self-esteem it can be the way of strengthening the self-image trough successes.
Is it safe?
Adventure educational activities must always be safe, mentally and physically, for all participants. In the methodology it is clear, that all growth happens in an area between comfort zone and danger zone. Participants have to be able to trust their trainer and other participants and trainers must know thoroughly what they are doing to maintain safety in activities. One part of planning the activities, is to make a very wide safety plan and never carry out activities you feel insecure about.
All in all, adventure education is an effective way of teaching skills that are not learned in everyday life and passing on target values. It will surely create memories that will never be forgotten!
