One year with YUT
Today we are going to explore the world of the Italian organisation YUT (Youth Union Think) which mainly works within the city of Rome.
This organisation led by young people and youth oriented is very innovative both in communication style and in contents provided, and is characterized by a great versatility, dealing with the vast majority of the community’s problems.
Let’s see in more detail some of the activities carried out this year by YUT. Following the idea of book-crossing coming from the US, YUT has started two book-sharing areas. They consist of a bookshelf left somewhere accessible to everybody, where anyone can take or leave books without control or asking for permission. The hotspots have been located next to metro stations, where lots of people walk by on a daily basis. It is up to the citizens whether to contribute leaving books, or taking books back. So far the project has grown and more than eight hundred books have gone through YUT’s book-crossing network.
Moreover, YUT provides cheap (or even free-of-charge) professionalizing training courses for young people not in education, employment or training. At the end of the course almost 20% of them succeeds in getting a job, thanks to a network of enterprises and to the cooperation with the local “Cité de metiers” (go to this link to know more about this network: www.reseaucitesdesmetiers.com/eng/index.php).
For the future months a web radio runs by young people is going to be financed, allowing young people to get involved into the building of a communication challenge and helping emerging artists, speakers and musicians to find a place to start. This project, whose name is “Yutradio”, will also collaborate with the local municipality in order to give the opportunity to people with disabilities or fewer opportunities to express themselves and their creativity throughout this media.
YUT is also advocating with the local politics on one hand in order to provide youth community a youth centre where all the activities would be held, and on the other hand to stop the spreading overbuilding on the coast. This is a topic of great importance in a place where at the present almost all the beaches are private and a long wall, called waterfront, defaced the typical coastal skyline. In order to promote the usage of public beaches and to celebrate its 2nd year anniversary YUT organized the “Stay YUT Color Festival” the 12th of July. This event saw the presence of more than six thousand young people! Stalls of local NGOs have participated in it, for the whole day free lessons in surfing, parkour and hip-hop took turns, then at nightfall all participants threw in the air a coloured powder to light up the night sky. It’s to point out that all colours used were certified 100% biodegradable and hypoallergenic.
