I am a Ukrainian
I am a Ukrainian. I want you to tell about my country. I want you to know why thousands of people all over Ukraine were in the center of Kyiv on Maidan for longest three months ever. All this time we were fighting for our freedom. We want to be free of dictatorship, we want to breathe free air and not to be afraid, we want to build democratic country and join the EU.
Our protest began peacefully. Ukrainian people had a dream. We wanted to join the EU. European integration was strategic point of Ukraine. But suddenly, on November 21, 2013, Viktor Yanukovych's government announces that it is abandoning an agreement that would strengthen ties with the European Union and instead seeks closer cooperation with Moscow. That day revolution began.
Current government was ready to do terrible things just to save their money. They initiated cruel beating of students, made a lot of provocations, used force, persecuted activists and finally launched a 3-day war in Ukraine. But all these measures only united us more. There is no more Left bank or Right bank Ukraine, Ukrainian or Russian speaking Ukraine. We united in the struggle for a common goal. It was something more than just European integration, it was revolution of dignity.
It wasn’t easy struggle. It even wasn’t equal struggle. We stood on Maidan Nezhaleshnosti alone without any weapon and without any armor. We had only warm hearts, cold mind and all-conquering love for the motherland. And we stood. We stood against Berkut (Ukrainian police), against snipers on the roofs, against all illegal regime of Victor Yanukovuch.
We reached our aim in the end. But the price for our freedom was very high. More than 100 people were fallen in our struggle. We call them “celestial hundred”. We will be thankful for them till the end of our days. Heroes do not die!
Now we have an opportunity to start from the scratch. I hope Ukraine will be an example for the entire world. The exampleof a nation that is not made to kneel. Because we should always remember that freedom is the highest value and nobody has the right to take it away.
I am a Ukrainian. And I’ve never been so proud of being Ukrainian. Glory to Ukraine! Glory to heroes!
