The Journey! Stories of Migration, Tales of Inclusion - Part 2 "Be the Refugee"
Two months passed from the first part of our project “The Journey! Stories of Migration, Tales of Inclusion”. The team of the exchange meets ones again in Thessaloniki, Greece from February 15th to 23rd February 2017. After finishing their homework, in which they used knowledge from first exchange, participants from Belgium, Cyprus, FYROM, Greece, Italy and the UK came together to finish work on a storybook and to prepare and launch new online campaign. The host of exchange in Thessaloniki was our Member organization “United Societies of Balkans” - USB. The exchange had aimed to develop and promote a new positive narrative of inclusion, giving the chance to young Europeans and young migrants to meet and share their stories (their journeys) in order to match them with the needs of the communities they live in.
Starting from this tough facilitators and educational coordinator created a program which faced participants with challenges from the first day. The first big challenge for participants was early morning of the second day, where suddenly they went on a journey of their own. This was part of an organized simulation of migrants path throught different countries. Tasks were to pass all stages and to fell some emotions connected to journey. The simulation was organized by professionals using already developed scenario by Red Cross and Caritas Italy. After a long day in simulation, participants had the opportunity to reflect on “journey” and to talk about their experiences, to share emotions and feelings they had during simulation. In next day participants were introduced to “concept of community matching” as a part of the development of new tools for refugee inclusion in local communities. Participants used best practices from countries and local communities across Europe for the development of their local action plans for implementation of this concept of community matching, that will give change for refugees in local communities to use their knowledge in order to help the community that they are in, in order to find their place in it. The final part of the exchange was in three days in which participants started development of storybook, and social campaign, in order to improve current situation regarding narratives on refugee issues. During this time, two groups worked simultaneously to finish real life stories of refugees, and to create interactive online campaign that will show lives of refugees in a different way, and from a different angle. Participants of exchanges used the time to visit abandoned refugee camp neer Thessaloniki in order to see the situation in which refugees were living just a few days ago. This gave participants of exchange, even more, motivation to finish campaign and book on time and to show the world real stories of ordinary people that are refugees.
The goals of our campaign are to share awareness, spread ideas, mobilize, create a networking platform and most importantly to humanize the people who are in the middle of the crisis so as to change the public narrative. There are 30 people working on this campaign, from 7 different European countries. We created this campaign during a youth exchange called “The Journey - Tales of Migration, Stories of Inclusion”.
