Brave New You - First stop, Slovenia
In the last few years we seem to have built a world in which xenophobia, nationalism, hate speech, homophobia and misogyny are on the rise and equity and solidarity are too often forgotten. Still, according to a study recently conducted by YEU network and its partners (https://wyredproject.eu/2017/
The workplan, in fact, foresees three different activities, complemented by local actions and initiatives developed by the participants themselves. The first event will take place in Crnomelj, Slovenia, a small community with an active youth centre that supports disadvantaged young people through a social enterprise from April 20th to April 27th, involving around 20 youth workers from 10 member organisations. As a follow up, youth workers will identify and reach out to young people from their communities to participate in the further process by creating a local action group including at least 3 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds that reflect the diversity of community they are coming from.
The first event is conceived as a training course aimed at empowering youth workers to support social cohesion and creation of equal opportunities for young people of different backgrounds (ethnic, religious, cultural, gender) on local level by questioning current harmful and extremist narratives and creating new positive ones for a more inclusive Europe. Together, we will build the capacities of youth workers to reach out and empower disadvantaged youth to be more engaged in societies and voice up their realities. YEU wants to be able to reach out to those who are usually under the radar of youth organizations due to various reasons, by developing new or empowering existing leaders and giving them educational and practical tools! This is what will happen in Slovenia, with an experienced Team composed by YEU PET members Brais Ferndandes, Igor Jojkic and Boguslawa Garus.
Overall, the vision behind the "Brave New Youth - Breaking the glass ceiling" workplan is a tolerant and open-minded society that perceives its differences as an enriching power and a distinctive advantage. Reaching out, getting together, challenging old and creating and disseminating new narratives for more inclusive Europe - this is "Brave new YOU - Breaking the glass ceiling" workplan in short. The project will also include a small research, an online campaign and a final publication.
The following activities will take place in Portugal (YEU Convention, in June/July 2018) and in Mollina (in september 2018). As a result of the whole process, YEU aims at having around 20 youth workers from at least 10 countries/communities around Europe empowered to reach out and engage disadvantaged youth, and above all to at creating new and inclusive narratives based on the reality of the communities involved … but still implementable in communities with similar realities around Europe, in a scaling up and multiplying process! YEU workplan will also contribute to make the organisations and communities involved “safer” and more inclusive for disadvantaged young people and to transform them into examples of how Europe can be - inclusive, supportive and celebrating varieties that enrich us.
